Hello World!

A first-of-its-kind crash course in English for Central Asian students that works

And a blog about education, technology, and global affairs from Kazakhstani and Central Asian perspective

Intro

My name is Adem. I used to be an unremarkable Kazakh who studied in a local school in Almaty, who, with tiny knowledge of English, and even smaller knowledge about university admissions, one day made a decision that to study abroad. As most of other Kazakhstani and Central Asian high-schoolers, I had to go through a shock therapy of having to learn everything about international university admissions from scratch and having to take tests and write essays all in a matter of months or even weeks. 5 years since, I have graduated as the top student in my major from National University of Singapore, got admitted into Master’s and fully-funded PhD programs at some of the world’s best universities, and am currently completing Master’s at Carnegie Mellon University in the US while doing research at Stanford. In this short intro I would like to introduce my website and tell you why you should even care about it.

The website consists of two parts: a crash course and a blog. A crash course is a place where I share everything I that learned about university admissions and how to succeed in them. The crash course is uniquely designed for students from Kazakhstan and Central Asia, and includes both general information and information applicable specifically to Central Asian students in order to take advantage of our unique background and skills and to maximize our potential. It also includes some “insider” information that very few people (at least in Central Asia) are familiar with. Personally being a Kazakh who has gone through this journey (twice), and after working as a mentor for many future students and researchers in Kazakhstan,  I have realized that there is a significant lack of educational and mentoring resources for people like us that are free, accessible, helpful, up-to-date, and are designed specifically for someone from Central Asia. Although there are some educational courses about university admissions in Kazakhstan and Central Asia, most of the good quality courses are not free and not readily and easily accessible in an online format. In this free-for-everyone and accessible course, you will be able to find not only everything that I have learned in the past 6 years about university admissions, but also very honest and relatively unknown tips, tricks, and advises that very few courses teach, designed specifically for someone from Central Asia. I have a track record of mentees getting accepted to top universities, such as Harvard, and the information that I share in the crash course is the information that helped my mentees achieve their success.

Second part of the website is a blog. The overarching themes of the blog are education, technology, and environment, and the blog posts are written from a Central Asian perspective. The target audience of the blog are both people from within Central Asia and from abroad, and the aim of the blog is to connect Central Asia with the global audience by posting high-quality facts-and-science-based articles and posts on various topics, issues, and developments in Central Asia, and by sharing Central Asian perspective on global news and developments. The inspiration for this blog was a video called “World’s Most Underrated Region! (CENTRAL ASIA)” by a popular travel youtuber Drew Binsky. The reason for the region being underrated is simple – we currently have very popular English-language content makers that make high-quality and interesting content about Central Asia. So, the rationale behind my blog is to attempt to fill this gap and to help global audience learn about Central Asia on the topics of education, technology, and environment. Another problem that lack of good English-language content makers from Central Asia brings is that many issues (both within and outside of Central Asia) are not covered from our unique perspective, so this blog is an attempt to do exactly that and to offer our collective opinion to the global audience. Currently I am the sole contributor to the blog and have to rely on my own expertise and efforts to create high-quality blog posts. Therefore, cooperation from anyone and in any shape or form (especially from English-speaking Central Asian students)  is welcome!

Why have I decided to start the crash course?

I have experience of mentoring high-school students, and I know that there is a plethora of talented and capable students in Kazakhstan and Central Asia who are not studying in international schools, or who cannot afford or do not have personal mentors or educational consultants, or simply do not know what to do or where to start. Being someone who once belonged to that group, I devised a course which is ideal for those who want to learn as much as possible about university admissions with minimal amount of time and ZERO money spent, and for those who want to gain a totally “uncensored” understanding of how to succeed in admissions to universities abroad and university life in general. I can guarantee that by the end of this crash course you will not only elevate your chances of success in admissions, but you will also be able to achieve it on your own!

How is this course different from others?

FOCUSING ON YOU

It is wholly focused on YOU, a student from Central Asia with big dreams but limited opportunities to realize them. Did you also have subpar English in school? Did you also follow an outdated state education system with limited global exposure? Do you also have no experienced friends or erudite personal mentors or an educational agency with good track record to help you? Do you want to hear tips and hacks that are designed for Central Asian students that take into account our unique identity and culture? If you said yes to at least one of the questions above, you WILL benefit from this course!

HONEST AND OBJECTIVE COURSE

In this crash course I will be sharing my honest advise that is not sponsored by any person or organization. In fact, to keep everything transparent, this course will not only be completely free, with zero ads or paywalls, but I will also not be accepting any sorts of gifts or voluntary donations that are related to this crash course in any way. My only vested interest is success of Central Asian students, and I will share only my honest opinions and reviews about certain universities, countries, or even specific programs. I will also be sharing “insider” information that very few people are aware of especially in Central Asia, for free. The theme of the website is to democratize high-quality knowledge and information about education, technology, environment, and global affairs, and make it accessible to everyone in Central Asia and abroad.

FULLY IN ENGLISH

I believe this website combining crash-course and blog is a first of its kind in Central Asia to be offered fully in English. The reason for this is so that all young people in Central Asia even with basic English skills are able to use the website, and so that as you complete the crash-course you will also be able to improve your English skills which will partly prepare you for tests and exams. I will also be sharing as part of this crash course how to learn English effectively and in a smart and effective way (remember that I also had poor English in high school, but was nonetheless able to bring it to an advanced level in less than a year).

ALL IN ONE

Although this course is not your personal mentor or teacher that provides all-around test preparation, it covers almost everything that you need to know to maximize your chances at getting into your dream universities so that you will be able to build a perfect plan to choose universities, prepare for tests, build portfolio, and send applications. This course also does not stop at undergraduate university admissions and covers admissions into Master’s and PhD programs for Kazakhstani and Central Asian students. It will also serve as a guide even after you get accepted into a university on how to take advantage of your university years to the fullest.

YOUR FEEDBACK MATTERS

I am a democratic person, and I would like to hear YOUR feedback so that I can learn from YOU too. If you think that anything in the website (crash-course or blog) should be added, changed, or removed, please let me know. Critical feedback is more than welcome!

SPICE UP YOUR INTEREST

To spice up your interest and gain your trust in what I said about my course, let me share the first few tips that I am sure you haven’t heard from anyone else:

Tip 4: Do not easily trust for-profit/paid educational consulting agencies that do not have mentors or clients that themselves were students in the universities that you want to apply to
